アメリカフランクリン研究所が1824年から物理や工学などの優れた研究者に贈っており、日本人では江崎玲於奈氏と有馬朗人氏に続いて3人目。過去の受賞者にはトーマス·エジソン、マリー·キュリー、アルバート·アインシュタインなどが含まれている。
外村彰 アメリカ科学アカデミー外国人会員(2000)
Physics部門(会員:178名)には42名のノーベル賞受賞者(外国人会員21名中10名)がおり、Physicsには、会員としては南部陽一郎氏、白根元氏がいるが、外国人会員は、湯川秀樹、朝永振一郎、久保亮五の三氏亡き後、日本人は一人もいなかった。尚、Engineering Sciences(会員: 96名)には、江崎玲於奈氏、猪瀬博氏が在籍。
